Equine-Assisted PSYCHOTHERAPY

The herd is here to help

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is far more than just talk therapy; we take our sessions "to the herd," into a relational and active space with a group of horses to get a unique perspective on life and whatever you may be facing.

Horses are amazing partners in therapy. As herd animals, they are inherently attuned to everything that is happening around them. They are emotional without judgment. They show us exactly what we are bringing into the space, communicating with clarity and forgiveness. They are social creatures, who can mirror our own love and relationship experiences amongst each other, and will form their own unique relationships with each of us. Being in a shared space with horses gets us out of our usual routines, and these large creatures tend to open us up to large emotions and experiences.

I offer Equine-Assisted therapy through the non-profit Horses Guiding Humans.

At this time, I am able to accept Regence and Premera insurance plans for Equine-Assisted sessions. My private-pay rate is $150 per session, though Horses Guiding Humans offers some sliding scale scholarship and grant-funded opportunities for those who are eligible

What to expect

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is different from room-based therapy.

Prepare to be in the elements!

Horses live outside, and our sessions take place in their space. Expect to be subject to the weather, and dress accordingly, with closed-toed and weather-appropriate footwear.

EAP does not involve riding, we work with the horses on the ground.

I am certified in the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model of EAP, which is strictly non-riding. All of our beautiful, powerful work takes place on the same level as the horses, feet firmly on the ground. Sessions may include structured or unstructured activities and engagement with the animals.

Both I and the horses will meet you where you're at.

We are all on your team, and are here to support your needs. The individual approach used in your sessions will depend on what your needs and treatment goals are.

Confidentiality is of the upmost importance, but may look a little different.

Equine facilities are unique in that we are not holding session in an enclosed office space. While your confidentiality is my top priority, please be aware that the equestrian facilities used for sessions may have animal care staff/property owners briefly visible at times. EAGALA sessions require both a Mental Health Specialist and Equine Specialist present to provide support to clients.
